Flower Power

I just wanted to let you know about a lovely act of kindness that happend on Saturday January 26th at the Victoria Hospital.

I was a clerk on one of the medical wards and on Saturday when a woman stepped off the elevators and approached my desk for information. She carried a bouquet of balloons and a package of flowers in her arms. She asked fora room number to visit a friend and when I told her she said thank youand handed me the package of flowers saying " theses are for you". I was in shockand she quickly moved off down the hall. I peaked into the package and found six pink long stem roses inside!

I at once thought of you and the random act of kindness on your station. Ialso thought of my best friends mother who is a palliative patient here and how she would love the smell of them. I went down the hall to the patients roomand told that lovely lady thank you so much for those beautiful flowersand that they were going to my friends ill mother on the other ward and how much she loved the smell of fresh flowers.

I hope she hears about this on the radio, because I still want to cry about how a stranger touched my heart and gave such joy to a another very ill person.

Jan Price
Day surgery
Victoria General Hospital

All Good with The Wood

Hi there,

I was returning a load of buffalo board from our new home, we have been renovating all summer and my husband and his friend loaded up about 30 big sheets of buffalo board on the back of our ¾ ton truck. Unfortunately they didn't put up the tail gate and when I was pulling away from a red light on Main Street by the Perimeter, right by the West St Paul Municipal office, the entire load flew off the back of the truck in the middle of the highway!

I quickly pulled over and as all kinds of trucks and cars pulled around me and continued on their way, I was struggling to drag the boards off the highway so they wouldn't get damaged, and a man out for a motorcycle ride going towards Selkirk did a U-turn and came back, took off his jacket and helmet and helped me return all the wood to the back of our truck.

I was absolutely amazed this kind stranger would take time to stop and do all this heavy lifting, and I could not be more grateful...he said he was out for a pleasure ride, and I want to say thank you so much, he restored my faith in good people out there....especially when about 10 or 15 cars gave me glares as they worked there way around me and my mess.

Thank you so much kind stranger!!!

The Clear Headed Saviour!

Just over 2 years ago I was driving down Moray on my way to visit my boyfriend when another car ran a red light. I saw them in time to swerve but couldn't avoid them entirely. I smashed into the back end of their car (I was later told if I hadn't swerved, the passenger in the other car would have been killed because they were going 20 or 30 over the speed limit) and our cars stuck together spinning a 180. My chest hit the steering wheel and I was splashed with liquid (which I, in my disoriented state of mind, thought was gas but later was told was coolant and washer fluid) and my car started smoking. I couldn't get the keys out of the ignition and I was convinced that the cars were going to blow up. I grabbed my cell phone and got out of the car trying to yell for the people in the other car to get out before they blew up. But the impact of the steering wheel had hurt my lungs so I couldn't actually get a breath big enough to do more than whisper. I staggered over to the sidewalk where I started to fall over. Suddenly a woman was beside me and I think she stopped me from full-out hitting the cement. I called my boyfriend and said I'd had an accident and that he had to come take me home because my car was totaled. I then tried to call home but the phone line was busy. I was in the middle of dialing my brother's cell phone when my battery died. By that time, I was in pain and finding it very difficult to breathe. Not to mention I was terrified my parents would be mad that I'd totaled their car and that I couldn't even get ahold of them to tell them. That was when I started to cry. The fantastic lady (who told me her name but I regretfully cant remember it) knelt down beside me and told me I could use her cell phone, and that the ambulance was on its way and would be there momentarily. I hadn't even thought of calling for medical help. (It was a good thing she was there because I clearly wasn't thinking straight). She stayed with me until the fire trucks turned up and the firemen started assessing my injuries. She also gave her report to the police (she had seen the accident) and was a witness when the other driver tried to blame the accident on me. This wonderful lady saved me that day. I never would have thought of calling an ambulance for myself, she comforted me, she lent me her phone, and she was my witness. I wanted to thank her and the police said they would give me her name but they never did. I know she lives (or did) somewhere near Moray and Bruce. If anyone knows her, please tell her thank-you for me! (Or better yet get her to contact me so I can thank her myself!)

Thank you thank you thank you!!

Constance

Spoke Impact from Kenya

Arvid Loewen, my father, is an incredible man who has taken a 2-year leave from his managerial position to put his whole heart, soul, time, resources, and energy into creating an ongoing financial support base for Mully Children's family (a series of unique and amazing orphanages) in Kenya, Africa. One of the ways he is doing this is by riding 333km a day on his bike until he reaches the 15,000km distance from Winnipeg to Kenya. This 45-day trek is an effort to raise $78 per child, to purchase food for one year. His goal is to be able to buy the food the orphanage needs (over and above what they produce themselves) for the 833 children under their care for one year: a goal of $65,000 CAD. As he rides his bicycle around Lockport and Bird's Hill Park for 12 or 13 hours a day, he is motivated by the knowledge that while he cannot change the whole world, what he is doing matter to Mumina, to Lydia, to Anastasia, and to Charity. Arvid is an example of passion colliding with compassion and blowing up into amazing things!

See http://www.spokeimpact.com/ for more info.

Another initiative of the website is a logbook where people can keep track of their exercise by distance or time and pledge money per km or min. While each person may only donate one penny per km of running, together with 40 others, this makes a difference to the children of the orphanages in Kenya. Maybe Chrissy Troy would be interested in that.

Thanks for your time,
Jodi Friesen

Costco Helper

Too often we're so consumed with our own lives that we forget to look around and notice an opportunity to make life just a little easier for someone else. It's truly the little things that mean so much.

We had to make a much-dreaded trip to Costco last Saturday. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE going to Costco - but everyone knows the line-ups are long and slow on any given Saturday and on this particular Easter-weekend Saturday, the lines were especially ridiculous. They went as far back as the book section! We only needed three measly things - a roast, a veggies & dip platter and a large bag of shredded cabbage.

After waiting in line for only a mere minute or two, a lady in the kindest voice said, "Here, you go in front of me...you've only got three things! The people behind me will probably give me heck but that's ok!"

So, she let us cut in front of her, saving us from having to wait in line to buy our three items. Everyone in the line, as to be expected since it's Costco, had huge carts full of stuff. She probably saved us at least an hour of standing in line. We thanked her and wished her a Happy Easter and were able to get home to our family gathering sooner than we would have without her help.

If you're reading this, you know who you are...and YOU ARE AWESOME! Thank you!

Swani

Who's that Coffee Guy?

Today at the Tim Horton's on St. Mary's, people would not let this guy in, so I did. In return, he paid for my coffee's. It felt great because when people let me in I do the same and pay for their orders. It was very shocking in a way because that has never happened to me before. So a big thank you to the man in the jeep. You made my day! It's great to see that there are still nice people in Winnipeg.

Elana.

War Child Helpers

I want to tell you about the students at Lockport School, and about how awesome they are. They have been at the school everyday getting ready for their upcoming performance, Through the Eyes of a Child, which runs April 18 & 19. Along with their drama teacher, Delayna Chester (pretty awesome too, by the way), the students have written a collection of plays to raise awareness for children living in war affected countries.

These multi-talented kids will be acting, singing, playing guitars, and dancing at the play. They have also been collecting silent auction prizes, and making crafts to sell at the event. All the money raised is going to War Child Canada, a non profit organization dedicated to helping war affected children worldwide. There have been at least 100 students and several great teachers involved with this production, and they should all be proud of themselves for doing their part in making the world a better place. Tickets are only $6, and available at Lockport School (757-9881).

I slept in this morning and woke up around the time that I am usually getting in the car to come to work - bad news. I stopped at the MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM...Muffins under the CanWest building for breakfast and was distraught to realize that they only take cash, which I didn't have on me.

The guy behind me paid for my muffin and juice, no questions asked! It was only $3.00 to him, but to me it made what started out as a terrible day a great one. I definitely owe someone a breakfast next time I'm there... Pay it Forward!

Sarah

Earlier this winter my 10 year old daughter and I were driving down McLeod by the Superstore. We saw an elderly lady pulling a full wagon of groceries. she was obviously struggling.

We decided to ask her if she would like a ride. She accepted. I loaded her stuff into my trunk, only to discover that her wagon did not fit into my car!!! My daughter pulled the empty wagon the three blocks to the lady's home, we unloaded her stuff, wished her merry xmas and were on our way. When we arrived home later, someone had shovelled our walk and steps right down to the concrete!!!
