In the early '80s, drummer Philly Joe Jones, with the strong assistance of trumpeter Donald Sickler (who transcribed the arrangements), revived the music of Tadd Dameron in a nonet called Dameronia. Two Uptown records resulted (with such sidemen as Walter Davis, Jr., Britt Woodman, Frank Wess, and Cecil Payne) before Jones' 1985 death. In 1989, Sickler gathered together the alumni (with Kenny Washington on drums) for a special Paris concert that was documented on Soul Note. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
