Pianist Donald Brown continues to play with authority, bluesy edge and gusto, and his writing remains intriguing, even though only three of the nine numbers on this disc are originals. Instead, he displays his ability to interpret and lead his group through quality versions of classics by Benny Golson ("Whisper Not") and Barry Harris ("Crazeology"), plus a contemporary number from Mulgrew Miller ("The Sequel"). Brown's playing on Stevie Wonder's title track and the standards "The Second Time Around" and "The Sweetest Sounds" caresses the melody, then takes off and presents his impressive variations and statements. Read More
