The music on this out-of-print LP is an interesting but sometimes uncomfortable mixture of advanced hard bop with electric instruments, aspects of funk, and the influence in spots of the avant-garde. Tenor great Joe Henderson is an asset to four of the seven selections (particularly an acoustic quartet rendition of "Invitation"), but most of the other players -- including Stanley Cowell, mostly on electric keyboards, Ricardo Strobert on alto and flute, and an oversized rhythm section -- sound rather faceless and anonymous. Read More
