Benny Green, 27 at the time of this CD, is a modern jazz classicist who has absorbed the music of many bop-oriented pianists into his own style. Hearing him play Bobby Timmons' "Dat Dere" makes it easy to believe that Green is a graduate of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Whether it be a rendition of "See See Rider" (very much in Red Garland's chordal style), the classic bop of Elmo Hope's "Crazy," a tender "I'll Wait and Pray" (one of three unaccompanied solos) or a lazy "Lil' Darlin'," Green plays quite creatively while remaining within the hard bop tradition. Read More
