Review by Scott Yanow
This CD reissue draws its music from singer Chris Connor's first three sessions as a leader. The set is comprised of three of the four songs that Connor recorded with Sy Oliver's Orchestra, five of the eight tunes (plus a "new" alternate take of "Why Shouldn't I") from a meeting with pianist Ellis Larkins' trio, and six of the eight selections from a date with the Vinnie Burke quintet, a group featuring clarinetist Ron Odrich and the accordion of Don Burns. Connor, who was 26 at this time, is in top form in all of the different settings and displays a wider range than one might expect. Read More
