Very much. I'm going to Hungary in a few weeks on my way to Ukraine and now I've got a book to read about life in Budapest. Love it. I like to learn. So, I shall read The Storyteller: A memoir of Secrets, Magic, and Lies by Anna Porter... and thanks for the heads up Sylvia.
Szia Ace,
Because you're going to Budapest to visit ( my people)... this book will give you a good little history lesson in the form of a story. Also if you would like Hungarian Lessons so you can say a few words while visiting Hungary, I could help you out with that. :) It's easy.

It is also, however, puzzling. The story is true. It's about a woman with MS who does all she can to raise a family. Eventually she gets a dog to help her out. The dog's name is Harmony. Again, a wonderful story. The puzzling part, however, is that the dog doesn't even make it into the book until halfway through. I'm not selfish... but I was told on the cover that this was a story about a dog changing lives. I had to keep checking the cover to see if I had read it wrong. I seriously did this a dozen times. I waited and waited for the dog to enter the story. If I had known in advance that there would be no dog until past the halfway point, I would have been fine with that, but that is not what ...

Maybe the best book review ever!!!

Kendra e-mailed me what may just me the best book review ever.
I read a book called ' Mockingbird'. It's about a girl, Caitlin, who has aspergers disease. Her brother, Devon, always cleared everything up for Caitlin, and made everything make sense. But the tragedy struck and Devon dieded in a shooting. Caitlin doesn't know what to do anymore but then on the news Caitlin hears about Closure. I think you should read about Caitlins journey to closure. This book is about the hard times in life and having to survive them. It's a book for everyone and it won't only help understand the world more but also the people on it. From your 11 year old friend : Kendra PS. it's not a book for only girls or only 11 year olds because we all need closure at some point in our lives. So please don't put this off. ...

Made in Manitoba: Best of the Open Road Stories

I've read some of Bill Redekop's stories over the years in the Winnipeg Free Press. They're not news stories, they're just stories. Stories about things, people, places, and animals in Manitoba. "Made in Manitoba" brings them all together in one book, and I would put this in the very good idea category. I'm always in for stories dealing with things I didn't know about in my province. The Best of Open Road will introduce you to bootleggers, to POW camps in Riding Mountain (what?), to a dog that lives on its own by choice after the family up and left... and tons more. Did you know donkeys are rented to protect cattle from wolves? There's a story about that. How much do you know about wood bison? You'll love them. You'll also love the guy who has bison roaming around inside his house. Great little stories. Great province.

Keith Richards: Life.

It took me a while to finish Keith Richards: Life, as I was using it as a nightly "read until I could fall alseep" book. I'm glad I took that approach. Sometimes I like getting through a book super fast - usually a novel - other times I like the journey to last a while. Here's what I knew before I read the book by the Rolling Stones legend: He did drugs, he was often on the verge of jail time, and there probably isn't anybody in the world who would still be alive having lived like Keith Richards. The book confirmed all of this... but what he was and still is really about is music. He loves music. As great as Keith Richards is, his appreciation for music and those who make it trumps all. He comes off as very humble, yet you can tell by his stories that he ...

Sarah's Key: Dana says read it!

Dana sent the following to Burpee's Book Club. It sounds like something I would enjoy, no question. I'm halfway through "Life" by Keith Richards and don't have anything lined up after that... so this will work nicely. Thanks Dana. Reading rocks.
Hey Ace,
This year I read Sarah's Key by Tatiana DeRosnay. I highly recomend this book. It is about a young girl in Paris during WWII. She ends up hiding her brother in a closet when the Jews are being rounded up. And it is also about a writer who is looking into the story. You will be sitting on the edge of your seat wondering what has happened to everyone.

Period. It's one of the reads in the running for the "On The Same Page" title for the coming year, and I think it's got a great shot. David Arnason, who teaches at the U of M and has strong Gimli ties, has written a beauty. There's love, business, history, music and tons of familiar names and places. I don't know if you do this, and perhaps it is just a by-product of great writing... but I could totally picture every single person and detail in the story. I also read it cover to cover without breaks... which I never do. Another sign of a winner. Baldur's Song, to me, is perfect. Thank you Mr. Arnason.

On The Same Page 2012!!!

Last year I was lucky enough to receive a copy of The Winnipeg Public Library and Winnipeg Foundation's "On The Same Page" winning book. On The Same Page is a yearly project aimed at getting as many Manitobans as possible reading and discussing the same book. To those who voted and chose the most recent winner, Juliana and the Medecine Fish... thank you. It was awesome. Honestly one of my favourites ever. This year, there are 4 more books to choose from. One will be the "winner" and be the focus of On The Same Page 2012. I've got all four, and I'm pumped to dive in and help pick the winner. "Winner" is probably the wrong word, as I'm sure they're worthy, but one must be chosen. Battling for the title this year are "The Setting Lake Sun", "Black Bottle Man", "Baldur's Song", and "Winnipeg 1912". I'm so pumped. I didn't go through ALL of the posts to find out. But, if you haven't already read The Gargoyle - YOU MUST READ THIS! The author is actually from Manitoba. But that's not why you should read it. This was one of the best books I have read in a long time, and I read A LOT! The guy can write - you will be HOOKED from the get-go. The chapters go back and forth between the two main characters and also back and forth between the present and multiple lifetimes ago. I could not put it down - I had to know what the heck was going to happen next. Just on another note - I too am a big fan of all kinds of kids books - A few top have-reads on ...

No Angel = Awesome.

I just finished reading No Angel: My Harrowing Undercover Journey to the Inner Circle of the Hells Angels. I also just started reading it. As in, I read it super fast, a good sign you're super into a book. Jay Dobyns is a cop. Jay Dobyns also became a full-patch Hells Angel while undercover. This is not easy to do. You can't just sign up for the Hells Angels. It's a tough club to join. You have to live a hard life, face numerous tests, keep people happy, make people money, follow a ton of rules (not laws) party hard, ride hard, show no fear, show tons of respect... and on and on it goes. Jay Dobyns transformed himself from a former football player, to a cop, to a Dad, to "Bird"... a thug who drew the attention and respect of the most notorious motorcycle club in the world. All fake. Well, ...
